Today we celebrated Tobin's birthday with a Chinese cake and a GermanAmerican Chinese soup. A couple of the other kiddies around here came in and sang him a birthday song, and he received a bunch of nice presents from his aunty and Omi. Tobin says thanks and thanks for all the nice wishes we have received on the blog and per email. Check Flickr for more bday photos.
We are very excited about starting the treatment tomorrow. Tomorrow he receives the cells through an IV, which is supposedly easier than through the spine, which we will start on Friday. We are still having a hard time believing that we are here and that something like stem cell therapy even exists. From everything we heard and read before we came, this therapy always sounded like something that would be possible in the distant future. Tomorrow we leap into that future and we will see what comes out on the other side. Of course we are a bit nervous. We just hope that Tobin makes it through the treatment without panicking too much. We will try our best to keep him calm.

tobis! happiest of first birthdays to you!! I bet you never thought you'd spend your first one in China, none of us did either. I remember very strongly where you were this day a year ago, and how it doesn't seem so long ago. All I can say is that I am happy you are there in hopes of making things easier for you, and I would be even more happy if you were here so I could hold you and see how you have grown. I love you very much and have all my appendages crossed in hopes that all will go well and that I will see you again soon.

Tobins Geburtstag
Heute feiern wir Tobins Geburtstag mit einer chinesischen Torte und einer deutsch-amerikanischen China-Suppe. Ein paar der anderen Kinder kamen vorbei und brachten ein Geburtstagsständchen. Außerdem bekam Tobin einen Haufen schöner Geschenke von seiner Tante und Omi. Tobin bedankt sich ganz herzlich! Auch vielen Dank an alle guten Wünsche die ihr uns geschickt habt. Es gibt viele tolle Fotos, der linkt liegt im englischen Text („Flickr“ anklicken!) Morgen geht die Behandlung los, wir sind schon sehr gespannt. Tobin wird die Zellen eingespritzt bekommen, was angeblich leichter sein soll als per Rückenmark, das soll Freitag beginnen.
Wir können es immer noch nicht so richtig glauben, dass wir hier in China sind und dass so etwas wie eine Stammzellentherapie überhaupt existiert. Es hörte sich alles so weit weg an wenn jemand darüber sprach, und jetzt? Morgen werden wir in die Zukunft springen, bald werden wir sehen, was sich auf der anderen Seite verbirgt. Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass Tobin die Behandlung mitmacht ohne sich allzu sehr aufzuregen. Wir werden versuchen, ihn möglichst ruhig zu halten. Ende
